Watts Illustration BootCamp 2020

Art Assignment 2: The Wizard and The Dragon
Description: Illustrate a scene in which a wizard type character is fighting a Dragon in an epic battle.  The Wizard and Dragon should be your own designs.  The location and time period is your choice.  Feel free to explore a cross genre theme.  For example Wildwest/Fantasy, or Sci-Fi/Fantasy.  The designs of the characters and environment should clearly define what genre you're crossing into.  The format is up to you, landscape or portrait.

I chose this prompt to illustrate my wizard, Emrhys fighting a dragon guardian of a lost library.
The setting is a large cavernous room with lots of giant pedestals where knowledge pools are kept, each one illuminated by it's own set of candles.

I want to depict the fight on one of this grand pedestals as Emrhys steals knowledge from the dragon.

Admittedly, I'm having a really difficult time balancing the scale of the dragon, and the wizard into an interesting composition even though the dragon is not a colossal figure.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Hey Nicholas! Man, this is gonna be cool. I really dig the idea of the wizard "flying" in the scene. (upper right, lower left) I like the window in the background of the upper right. It gives a feel of the wizard defending a temple that the dragon has come into. You could potentially play this idea up.

I also like the idea of the wizard being dominate in the image. I almost feel sorry for the dragon. The lighting of the magic is very cool as well. You could focus the wizard with that contrast and subtly light the dragon that isn't fully recognizable on it's first pass.

Assuming you go with top right, I'd play with the gesture of the dragon a bit. Mainly in the tail and body, the head makes a good silhouette. Maybe have the dragon's body coming towards the viewer somehow. This could give you more depth in the image. I'd also play with the values and details around the window. It should remain somewhat simple but some value shifts could be nice. Maybe some shadows from the light the magic is creating would give you a chance to put more darks into the bg.

Hope this gives you a little direction. I'm looking forward to seeing this one come up.
